Jacksonville, North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was constructed back in 1941. It’s a widely known training center that accommodates the needs of the United States military. It’s located in Jacksonville, North Carolina. It spans a total of 246 square miles. It’s a common site for amphibious assault training applications of all kinds. It’s in the middle of a couple of deep water ports. These are Morehead City and Wilmington. The camp, as a result, is a notable spot for speedy deployments.

It has a primary location in Jacksonville. It also has numerous satellite centers. These are Stone Bay, Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson, Courthouse Bay, the Greater Sandy Run Training Area and Marine Corps Air Station New River. The Greater Sandy Run Training Area is the newest introduction.

Resident commands at this camp include the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the Marine Corps Installations East, Marine Special Operations Support Group, the Marine Special Operations Regiment, the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command and, last but not least, FMTB (Field Medical Training Battalion).

This camp is home to a military prison. The prison has been in use since the end of the 1960s. It opened its doors in 1968. It at the moment can accommodate upward of 280 individuals at a time. Inmates generally remain incarcerated at this prison for anywhere between one and three months.

The building of Camp Lejeune was officially given the “OK” in the spring of 1941. William P.T. Hill started working on building the Marine Barracks on May 1st, 1941. Learn more…
