What ever happened to people being honest? There was a time in our world when folks generally looked out for each other and protected the vulnerable. Where it was common courtesy to lend a hand to a stranger in time of need and to be trusting of our fellow man; not always looking for the scam in everything people do. It seems society has fallen a long way from those “good ole days,” as now people are consumed with self protection and tend to turn a blind eye to other people’s problems. Perhaps the population increases are partly responsible. As our cities get bigger and bigger people feel less connected with those around them. Gone is a time when we know the names and birthday dates of each of our neighbors. Society has lost the a sense of loyalty to those around us. We live in a day of anonymity because of the volume of people around us. Technology has not helped much, and might have made things worse. Even though people have more connections to each other through social media, it seems technology has produced a voyeuristic apathy in people. We have become of generation of watchers only, and have removed ourselves from any real involvement. We can get up-to-the-second updates about the lives of people we follow but this is not real interaction, as these connections may be with people in other parts of the world, and maybe even with people we will never meet. Ever!!
I watched a clip of a pickpocket social experiment recently and was amazed at what I saw. Three friends took to the streets in their hometown, one man would stand on the corner and play with his phone as his back was turned to the main crowd of people and his wallet would be protruding out of his back pocket. Then the other friend would walk past, in a seemingly chance encounter, and in full view of all around, he would proceed to remove the wallet from his friends pocket. The third man would secretly film how people reacted from a distance. Amazingly the majority of people watched what they believed to be a legitimate theft and keep on walking. Very few ever got involved.
It was a sad commentary on the state of humanity today. Watch this clip and check yourself as to what you might do in that situation. Could you honestly just walk by and ignore what you saw?
